Dietetic Internship Program

How to Apply

Application Procedure
  1. Application to the dietetic internship program requires that you successfully complete:

  •  The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) Didactic Program in Dietetic (DPD) requirements.

  • At least a bachelor’s degree at a U.S. regionally accredited university or college prior to the start date of the internship.

  • Meet recency of education requirements.

  • Take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) prior to the start of the internship.

The selection of dietetic interns is made from the best qualified candidates without discrimination for any non-merit reason such as race, national origin, color, creed, religion, sex, age, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or associational preference.  The evaluation is based on:

  • Scholarship (38%) - Grade Point Average (3.0 on a 4.0 scale is preferred), and Graduate Record Examination (verbal and quantitative scores at or above the 50% is preferred)

  • Work / Volunteer Experience (25%)

  • Extracurricular activities/honors/leadership (8%)

  • Personal Statement (20%)

  • Academic and employer references (9%)

No specific attempt is made to produce a wide geographical variation.  Applicants from the same college or university are selected on the basis of individual qualification and there is no limit on the number selected from the same college or university.

Recency of Education Requirements

Additional courses in dietetics or a related area are required to update a degree which was completed five (5) or more years prior to the current application postmark deadline.  The number of required credits is outlined below:

5-10 years (6 semester hours of Medical Nutrition Therapy or Clinical Nutrition)

10 years or longer – Meet current Didactic Program in Dietetic requirements with no fewer than 12 semester hours.  A verification statement signed by the Program Director and completed within three years of application deadline must be submitted

Courses taken to satisfy the requirements must be completed at a U.S. regionally accredited college or university.  A transcript verifying completion of the courses with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher per course, must accompany the application packet.

Obtaining Dietetic Credentials with a Foreign Degree

The Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) requires individuals with foreign degrees (those that have been educated outside the United States and its territories) meet specific educational requirements and follow a unique process to obtain Registered Dietitian (RD) credentials.  Details are outline on the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) website at http://www.eatrightacend.org/ACEND/content.aspx?id=6442485501

English Proficiency Requirements

The University of Iowa Graduate College requires that international applicants whose first language is not English must submit results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) for admission to the university.

Automatic waivers of this requirement are granted for persons who have completed a bachelor’s degree (or higher) at an accredited university in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada (excluding French Quebec), Africa (English speaking), Australia, or New Zealand.
