Treatment

Conservative treatment usually consists of reducing the frequency and duration of stressful activities, stretching the involved compartment, using soft orthotic inserts, providing adequate hydration, massage, using NSAIDs and icing after activity. If symptoms persist for more than 6 months, fasciotomy (cutting the overlying restrictive, fibrous material similar to a fine burlap in a lengthwise manner) can provide significant relief. Recurrence of symptoms following conservative treatment is common unless the patient gives up the precipitating activity. Athletes unwilling to give up their level of activity will require surgery. Outcome of surgery is generally good, particularly if the symptoms have been present for less than one year.

Discussion with your physician is necessary for diagnosis, treatment, and management.
