Overview

Chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS) is an overuse phenomenon typically involving the lower leg. The lower leg, especially the anterior compartment, is involved because of the relatively small area with the lack of ability to dissipate pressure. It often occurs in athletes, particularly in relation to rigorous training. The pain is often delayed until the athlete has been exercising 5-30 minutes. CECS is a painful syndrome that often ends an athletes career if not diagnosed and managed appropriately.
