Thank you for your inquiry concerning the Dietetic
Internship Program at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC).
This institution, one of the largest university-owned teaching hospitals
in the nation, has conducted a dietetic internship since 1923. The UIHC
Dietetic Internship Program is a challenging 10-month post-baccalaureate
program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), 120 South

ACEND is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council on
Higher Education Accreditation and the United States Department of
Rotation, classes and other learning experiences
are designed to meet the Standards of Education and the Competencies for Supervised Practice Programs established by ACEND. The
concentration of the internship program is medical
nutrition therapy; however, the program offers
management, clinical, research, and community experiences. This design
allows the dietetic intern to achieve entry-level knowledge and skills
in all areas of dietetics. The program also provides 9 hours of
graduate credit in the College of Public Health in addition to the work
experience to make it an intensive program. Following completion of the
internship, the graduate credit earned may be applied toward an advanced
Upon completion of the Dietetic Internship at UIHC,
the graduates receive a Verification Statement making them eligible to
sit for the registration examination to become Registered Dietitians.
Over the last five years, the pass rate for the registration examination
for our graduates has been 88%. As graduates of the UI Hospitals and
Clinics Dietetic Internship, your status to prospective employers is
very high. Many of our graduates have gone on to be leaders in the
dietetic profession including those who have served as president of The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
