Estimated Average Glucose (eAG)

Beginning Monday October 20, 2008, the UIHC Chemistry Laboratory will change its method of calculating an estimated plasma glucose concentration from Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) results. The new method is based on the recently published, multicenter ADAG study. This study included both type 1 and 2 diabetics using both continuous glucose monitoring and frequent fingerstick capillary glucose monitoring. With our old estimation method, an HBA1c result of 7% would yield estimated plasma glucose of 172mg/dL and the new method would give 154mg/dL plasma glucose for the same 7% HbA1c result. If you have questions, please contact either George Johnson, Ph.D. (6-1805) or Ronald Feld, Ph.D. (6-1759).
