Specimen Instructions:
Draw in a pre-chilled pink top K2EDTA tube. After refrigerated centrifugation, immediately freeze plasma. Do not thaw plasma after freezing.
Collection Medium:
Pink top tube 6 mL (K2-EDTA)
Minimum:
Preferred Minimum: 1.8 mL plasma
Absolute Minimum: 0.6 mL plasma
Prechill one 6 mL Pink top K2EDTA tube 30 minutes prior to collection.
Rejection Criteria:
Thawed specimens. Grossly icteric or lipemic specimens.
Delivery Instructions:
Deliver to laboratory immediately after collection. Critical frozen. Additional specimens must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered.
Turn Around Time:
7-17 days upon receipt at reference laboratory.

Somatostatin is a neurohormone produced in the brain, hypothalamus and gastrointestinal tract. This test is used to diagnose somatostatin- producing tumors. Elevated levels are observed with somatostatinoma, medullary thyroid carcinoma and pheochromocytoma.
