Suggested: Collect the specimen after an overnight fast.

Light Green top tube (Lithium Heparin)

Minimum:

Preferred Minimum: 1 mL lithium plasma in an amber transport tube (transport tubes are located in Specimen Control)
Absolute Minimum: 0.5 mL lithium plasma in an amber transport tube

Rejection Criteria:

Whole blood. Specimens not protected from light. Icteric specimens.

Delivery Instructions:

Wrap specimen in aluminum foil to protect from light. Deliver to laboratory immediately after collection.

Turn Around Time:

2-5 days upon receipt in reference laboratory

Reference Range:

20-125 nmol/L

Interpretive Data:

Pyridoxal 5'-phosphate measured in a specimen collected following an 8 hour or overnight fast accurately indicates vitamin B6 nutritional status. Non-fasting specimen concentration reflects recent vitamin intake.

Note: The biologically active form of vitamin B6, pyridoxal 5- phosphate, is measured in this assay.
