Research

The Human Brain Research Laboratory is a multidisciplinary and collaborative endeavor made possible through a strong team effort of professional researchers and neurosurgeon scientists dedicated to addressing key questions in neuroscience. The aim of HBRL is to achieve a comprehensive basic understanding in the field of human brain physiology that serves as a foundation for future translational research and the development of effective therapies for various neurological diseases. Directed by Professor Mathew Howard III, the laboratory works as an extension to the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, which provides excellence in teaching, research, and the highest quality of patient care. We conduct most of our research at The University of Iowa, though we collaborate extensively with University of Wisconsin (Madison), California Institute of Technology, Newcastle University, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Northwestern University, National Cheng Kung University, and National Chiao Tung University, among other institutions. Our broad range of interests includes areas of research committed to auditory processing, neuroeconomics, sensory-motor integration, and visual processing. Our research makes use of technologies such as electrocorticography, functional MRI, and psychophysical experimentation.
