Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a well-kown agent of acute and chronic hepatitis, with approximately 300 million chronic carriers around the world. In the early 1970s, serotyping of HBV was introduced as a means of classification of varying HBV strains. Serotyping refers to the seroreactivity to three antigenic determinants residing in the HBV S antigen. The genomic basis for the seroreactivity has been elucidated by sequence analysis of the S gene, and it has been shown that the serotypes do not truly reflect phylogenetic relatedness within HBV. Genotyping methods based on sequence analysis of the HBV genome have recently been developed. This test can determine the following HBV genotypes: A1-A3, B1-B3, C1, C2, D1-D6, E, F1 and F2. | ||
