O’Dorisio honored as the 2015 Distinguished Mentor

The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine Distinguished Mentor Award honors faculty members whose distinguished careers have resulted in the mentoring of individuals who have gone on to have their own distinguished careers. Dr. O'Dorisio, Professor of Pediatrics-Hematology/Oncology, has an outstanding record of mentoring trainees, faculty and staff at all levels. Her guidance and leadership has influenced the lives and careers of many scientists and physicians at Iowa and beyond.

The 2015 Distinguished Mentor Award Celebration will honor Dr. O’Dorisio, with a distinguished mentor’s lecture by Robert Weinberg, PhD, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The celebration will be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at 1:00pm in the Prem Sahai Auditorium (1110A MERF).

Research Faculty Advisory Group Announced

The CCOM Research Faculty Advisory Group provides constructive input on research issues to CCOM leadership and actively communicates strategic intiatives to the CCOM research workforce. The group is comprised of 12 faculty, 9 of which are selected from a faculty voting process and 3 appointed by the Dean's Research Team to balance the group or to provide specific expertise.

New High-Speed Cell Sorter Available in Flow Cytometry Facility

A new Becton Dickinson FACSAria Fusion three-laser, eleven-color, high-speed cell sorter was recently installed in the Flow Cytometry Facility. The biosafety cabinet provides a high level of operator safety allowing potentially biohazardous samples to be sorted such as those from virally transformed cell lines and primary human tissue from patients.

Carver Trust Pilot Grants

The Carver College of Medicine announces internal funding opportunities for Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust Medical Research Initiative Grants and Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust Collaborative Pilot Grants.

Applications for each will be accepted through Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at 5:00pm.

The 2015-2016 Distinguished Biomedical Scholars Lecture Series continues Thursday, November 19, with a talk by professor of pharmacology and psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Solomon Snyder, MD, DSc, DPhil titled "Novel Neural Messengers in Huntington's Disease."

CCOM Support for External Review of Grant Applications

The CCOM is accepting requests for funding of external reviewers to serve on a formal review committee that will assess NIH critiques and provide critical feedback for NIH R01 A1 submissions. The goal is to provide funding for on-site visits by the external reviewer to formalize and incentivize the grant review process.
