Minimum:

Collect saliva from inside baby’s cheek using TWO Copan Dry Swab (Product #139643) and send to Microbiology Lab. Collect swab 2 hours or more after feeding.

Testing Schedule:

24 hrs/day, 7 days a week, including holidays.

24 hours (upon receipt in laboratory)

Testing for congenital CMV should only be obtained if the newborn has failed TWO hearing screens and is less than 21 days of age.

Instructions:

Saliva swabs may be stored at room temperature (19-30°C), refrigerated (2-8°C), or frozen (≤ -20°C) after collection and during transportation to the laboratory. Samples should be tested as soon as possible but may be stored for up to 48 hours at 19-30°C, or 7 days refrigerated (2-8°C) prior to testing. Samples that will not be tested within 7 days should be frozen immediately at ≤ -20°C and may be stored up for to 14 days.

Sample Processing:

Label transport tube with two patient identifiers, date and time of collection.
Maintain sterility and forward promptly to lab.
Specimen should be collected and packaged as close to shipping time as possible.

Transport Instructions:

Place requisition into outside pocket of bag.
Place specimen into zip-lock type bag, seal bag.
