Label Mnemonic: | EBVQNT |
Epic code: | LAB7789 |
Order form: | Microbiology/Molecular Infectious Disease Requisition |
Supply order: | Supply Order Form |
Billing: | Billing Policies |
CPT code: | 87799 |
Specimen(s):
Blood
Collection Medium:
![]() |
Pink top tube 6 mL (K2-EDTA) |
Minimum:
6 mL whole blood or 3 mL plasma.
Testing requires a dedicated collection tube.
Sample tube must remain sterile. EBV molecular testing cannot be
added onto a previously opened Vacutainer® tube.
Turn Around Time:
Batched test performed on Tuesday and Friday
Reference Range:
Negative
Interpretive Data:
Analytical range in log10 values:
2.7 - 8.48 IU/mL (500-300,000,000 IU/mL non-log transformed values)
Positive results less than 500 IU/mL will be reported as "POS <2.7 LOG IU" ("POS <500 IU/mL") and negative results will be reported as "Not detected" (NOT DET).
The assay is calibrated to the WHO international standard.

Comments:
This test is only used as an aid in monitoring EBV-related
disease.
It is not appropriate for the diagnosis of mononucleosis; order serological testing Epstein-Barr Viral Ab Panel (LAB4584) instead.
Specimens stored at 4°C will be accepted up to 72 hours after collection. If > 72 hours, centrifuge and freeze the plasma.
The performance characteristics of this test were determined by the University of Iowa Microbiology and Molecular Pathology Laboratory. It has not been cleared or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA has determined that such clearance or approval is not necessary. This test is for clinical purposes. It should not be regarded as investigational or for research. The laboratory is certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA) as qualified to perform high complexity clinical laboratory testing.

Methodology:
PCR amplification
Instructions:
Sample Processing: Centrifuge for 20 minutes at 1600 x g within 4 hours of collection. Aseptically enter the tube and aliquot plasma into sterile tubes. Store at 2-8°C for 72 hours or -20 to -80°C long term. Transport Instructions: Place coolant packs into styrofoam container. Place requisition into outside pocket of bag. Protect specimen by wrapping in bubble-wrap or toweling. Recommend express mail or equivalent if not on courier service.
