Minimum:
ONE 6 mL whole blood in a Pink top tube or TWO 3 mL whole blood in lavender top tubes. HEV molecular testing cannot be added onto a previously opened Vacutainer® tube. Testing requires a dedicated collection tube.
Testing Schedule:
0800-1700 Testing offered once per week excluding weekends and University holidays.

The performance characteristics of this test were determined by the University of Iowa Microbiology and Molecular Pathology Laboratory. It has not been cleared or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA has determined that such clearance or approval is not necessary. This test is for clinical purposes. It should not be regarded as investigational or for research. The laboratory is certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA) as qualified to perform high complexity clinical laboratory testing.

Sample Processing:
All collection tubes need to be processed within six hours of collection. If specimens cannot reach the laboratory at UIDL within six hours, process as follows.

Pink or lavender top tubes:
Centrifuge for 20 minutes at 800-1600 x g. Aseptically enter the tube and separate plasma into sterile tube. Transport to the laboratory on ice within 24 hours.
Sample Storage:
Refrigerate.
Transport Instructions:
Place coolant packs into Styrofoam container.
Place requisition into outside pocket of bag.
Protect specimen by wrapping in bubble-wrap or toweling.
Recommend early AM overnight shipping or equivalent if not on courier service.
Specimen can be shipped frozen.
