Rejection Criteria:
CSF, rectal swab, or stool. Whole blood in viral transport media.
Calcium alginate, eSwab, dry, or wood swabs.
Turn Around Time:
1-5 days upon receipt at reference laboratory.
Reference Range:
Culture negative for CMV by early antigen test.
Comments:
Cytomegalovirus by PCR is a more sensitive method for the detection
of CMV viremia and central nervous system infections, especially in
the immunocompromised patient.

Transfer specimen to viral transport media as soon as possible
after collection.
Sample Processing:
Immediately place specimen into vial of transport media and seal
tightly.
Indicate specimen/fluid type on requisition.
Label transport tube with two patient identifiers, date and time of collection.
Maintain sterility and forward promptly to lab.
Do not collect on Fridays, on weekends, or before any holidays.
Keep refrigerated and submit to laboratory.
