Protein-Urine, Random
Label Mnemonic: URPR
Epic code: LAB845
Order form: Laboratory Requisition
Supply order: Supply Order Form
Billing: Billing Policies
CPT code: 84156 (protein)
82570 (creatinine)
Specimen(s):
Urine, Random (Includes Prot/Creat Ratio)
Collection Medium:
Clear top tube
Alternate Collection Media:
Call laboratory for additional acceptable specimen collection containers.
Minimum:
3.0 mL random urine; no preservatives.
Testing Schedule:
24 hrs/day, 7 days a week, including holidays.
Turn Around Time:
1 hour (upon receipt in laboratory)
Reference Range:
The reference range for the urine protein/creatinine ratio is < 0.2 for 2 years or older. Reference range for the ratio is not established for children less than 2 years old. No established reference range for random urine protein concentration.
Comments:
The urine protein/creatinine ratio is automatically calculated if
a
urine protein and urine creatinine are ordered on the same specimen.
The urine protein/creatinine ratio allows for an estimation of
proteinuria based on a single random urine collection. A 24 hour
urine
protein determination remains the recommended true measure of
proteinuria. The reference range for the urine protein/creatinine
ratio is < 0.2 for 2 years or older. Reference range for the ratio is
not established for children less than 2 years old.

Test Limitations:
Contamination of urine with menstrual blood, prostatic
secretions, or semen may result in increased urine protein levels.
Vigorous exercise in healthy individuals may result in increased urine
protein levels. Intra individual variability in creatinine clearance
can be due to diet (e.g., amount of ingested meat) and total skeletal
muscle mass.

Criterion: recovery plus or minus 10% of initial values

Icterus: No significant interference up to an I index of 45
(approximate conjugated and unconjugated bilirubin concentration: 45
mg/dL).

Hemolysis: No significant interference up to an H index of 50.

No significant interference from:
Ascorbic Acid Creatinine Glucose
Phosphorus Urea Magnesium
Sodium Citrate Caffeine Cefazolin Sodium
Chlorpromazine Calcium L-Dopa Gentamicin
Sulfate Sodium Oxalate Uric Acid
