Issues with Sodium and Chloride Measurements in Core Laboratory, Friday, August 12th, 2022

An unexpected issue has been discovered that impacted some plasma/serum sodium and chloride measurements in the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) core laboratory during the daytime shift on Friday, August 12th, 2022. The laboratory is in the process of pulling all potentially affected samples and retesting. Results will be error corrected in Epic as soon as possible.

For those samples affected, the erroneous sodium value is on average about 7.3 mEq/L lower than actual value. For chloride, the erroneous value is on average 6.6 mEq/L lower than actual value.

We apologize for the error.

Questions about specific patient test results should be directed to Specimen Control (356-3527). All other questions should be directed to Matthew Krasowski, MD, PhD (384-9380, pager 1171, matthew-krasowski@uiowa.edu).
