Rejection of Hemolyzed Coagulation Specimens

Beginning of January 19, 2015, the Hematology Laboratory will reject moderately and grossly hemolyzed coagulation specimens sent in blue top tubes (see Chart below). These specimens are not acceptable for coagulation testing as release of intracellular or membrane components may cause clotting factor activation and artificially shorten clotting times. If there is sufficient hemolysis to cause rejection of the specimen the patient care area will be notified.

If you have questions feel free to contact either Nancy Rosenthal, MD (pager 7057 or 6-3059) or Mary Capper, MT(ASCP)SH (7-5467).
