Change in Reference Ranges for Serum/Plasma Phosphorus

Effective today, October 13, 2015, the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics core clinical chemistry laboratory will update reference ranges for serum/plasma PHOSPHORUS (LAB113).  The main impact is on pediatric patients which now have more detailed age- and gender-specific reference ranges.  The adult reference range shifts slightly on the lower end.

These ranges follow the updated package insert of the Roche Diagnostics assay used in the core laboratory.

Reference range changes are summarized below:

Previous Reference Ranges Males (mg/dL) Females (mg/dL)
Newborn to 11 months 4.2-9.0 4.2-9.0
12 months to 15 years 3.2-6.3 3.2-6.3
16+ years 2.7-4.5 2.7-4.5

New Reference Ranges Males (mg/dL) Females (mg/dL)
1-30 days 3.9-6.9 4.3-7.7
1-12 months 3.5-6.6 3.7-6.5
1-3 years 3.1-6.0 3.4-6.0
4-6 years 3.3-5.6 3.2-5.5
