A new protocol was developed to expedite the UIHC pathology examination of slides from outside facilities.  Protocol for Ordering Review of Outside Pathology Slides, AC-AMBP-AMB-22.102 is located on the ambulatory Web page.

For those patients who have a scheduled appointment (excluding Dermatology Clinic), the outside pathology department is instructed to mail pathology slides directly to the UIHC Anatomic Pathology Department.  Pathology clerical staff place the order to have the slides reviewed "per protocol", which eliminates the need for the slides to travel to the appropriate clinic for an order to be placed (average travel time of 1.2 days with average distance of 1.06 miles).

• Clinics may need to change request forms sent to outside pathology departments instructing them to send slides directly to the Anatomic Pathology address (5231 RCP) versus the clinic address.
• Anatomic Pathology scans in the pathology report accompanying the slides at the point of accessioning.  The outside report is viewable in the media tab and by clicking a link in the report in Chart Review, once the case has been Final Verified.
• Nursing notification that slides have arrived can be viewed via EPIC based on "Consult Pathology: Surgical Pathology" or "Consult Pathology: Bone Marrow Examination" orders and/or a report can be built based on patients with this order.
