Changes to Iron Panel

Effective Wednesday, September 25, 2013, there will be changes to the IRON PANEL (Epic # LAB94) performed by the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics core clinical laboratory.  The major change will be to perform transferrin instead of unsaturated iron binding capacity (UIBC) in this panel.  The % iron saturation will be calculated by an equation using the measured iron and transferrin plasma/serum concentrations.

The new iron panel will be called IRON PANEL (IRON, TRANSFERRIN, AND % SATURATION) (Epic # LAB94) and will have the following components:

Name Revised Reference Ranges (if applicable)
IRON, SERUM No change from current ranges
TRANSFERRIN, SERUM* 200 – 360 mg/dL
IRON (TRANSFERRIN) SATURATION Males:     20-50%
Females:  15-50%

*Also available as standalone order outside of iron panel (LAB958).

Questions should be directed to Matthew Krasowski, MD, PhD, medical director of the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory (384-9380, matthew-krasowski@uiowa.edu).
