Changes in Pathology Phlebotomy and Laboratory Services
The Department of Pathology will be making changes to the delivery of phlebotomy services as described below.
Effective Tuesday, January 20th:
• The Pathology Procedure Room (located on 6 RCP, room 6223) will be closed. Adult patients can be directed to the Pomerantz Family Pavilion phlebotomy station on the 3rd Floor (proceed forward after exiting Elevator L) between the hours of 7:00 am and 6:00 pm.
• The Family Care Center phlebotomy station (LL PFP, room 01250) will be closed on Saturdays.
• The Pediatric Specialty Clinic phlebotomy station (2 JCP, room 2477) will stop taking requisitions at 4:00 pm and will close at 4:30 pm.
• The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center phlebotomy station (4 JPP, room 4820) will close at 3:30 pm.
Effective Saturday, February 7th:
• Pathology will discontinue inpatient PM phlebotomy services.
Effective as necessary:
• When phlebotomy staffing levels fall below minimum on a given day, Pathology will implement a contingency plan. Inpatient phlebotomy services (AM phlebotomy and NICU) will be given priority; phlebotomy resources will be reallocated to all inpatient areas and minimized in outpatient clinic areas. Inpatient services may also be affected; phlebotomy services will be delivered to patients designated as priority by the floor nursing staff. When it is necessary to implement the contingency plan, Pathology will issue an immediate communication to the affected areas.
The Department of Pathology will be making changes to laboratory services as follows:
• Effective Tuesday, January 20th, the Family Care Center Laboratory (LL PFP) will be closed. The Family Care Center phlebotomy station will continue to operate.
• Specimens collected in the Family Care Center phlebotomy station will be transported to other Pathology areas for analysis.
The Department is taking all possible steps to evaluate staffing models and process efficiencies to enable the most effective delivery of services.
