Method Change for Detecting CSF Oligoclonal IgG Bands

Effective 04/30/02, the electrophoretic method for detecting CSF oligoclonal IgG bands has been changed. The former method was agarose gel electrophoresis and was performed in the Immunopathology Lab. The new method is IgG immunofixation electrophoresis and will be performed in the Clinical Chemistry Lab. The sensitivity and specificity of the two methods are similar. For the "MS screen" test, the required CSF sample size is now 2.5 ml. For any questions, contact Charles T. Lutz, M.D., Ph.D., at 335-8151.
