The intent of this message is to explain the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory's policy regarding throat cultures. Routine cultures of the oropharnyx consist of a screen for beta-hemolytic streptococci. If beta-hemolytic streptococci are present, Group A beta-hemolytic strep are ruled in or out. We do not routinely process throat cultures for other organisms. However, in specific circumstances (eg. selected surveillance cultures, deep throat swabs from Cystic Fibrosis patients, etc.), it is appropriate to screen throat swabs for more than just beta-hemolytic streptococci. In such cases, please make a suitable notation on the requisition and the appropriate analyses will be performed. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Please direct questions or concerns to Gary V. Doern, Ph.D., (6-8616) Director, Clinical Microbiology Laboratory.
