Specimen Instructions:
Healthcare providers suspecting a potential case of Zika Virus must contact the Iowa Department of Public Health's Center for Acute Disease Epidemiology (CADE) at 800-362-2736. CADE staff will consult with the provider to determine whether the case meets the CDC testing criteria. If testing is warranted, CADE staff will determine the specimens to collect, and send out a IDPH Zika Test Request Form.
For Zika, chikungunya, and dengue testing:
   • Serum - at least 1.0 mL
   • Whole blood (EDTA)
   • CSF - at least 0.5 mL

For Zika testing only:
   • Urine
   • Amniotic fluid - at least 1.0 mL
Delivery Instructions:
Keep on ice and deliver to laboratory immediately. Transport specimen on ice along with completed forms to the Microbiology Laboratory at 6004 BT.
INSTRUCTIONS: 1) Call IDPH at 800-362-2736 for approval and a IDPH Zika Test Request Form. 2) Fill out all sections of form except the organization information. 3) Transport specimen along with completed form to the Microbiology Laboratory at 6004 BT. 4) Test performed at State Hygienic Laboratory. Microbiology Laboratory will accept specimens 7 days a week, 24/7. Specimens mailed out M-F.
