Stool Collection Information
Patient Preparation:
The patient should be instructed not to take any antacids, oily laxatives, or anti-diarrheal medications, unless prescribed by physician.

Collection Instructions:
WARNING: Total-Fix Solution in transport vial is POISONOUS. Do not drink. If ingestion occurs, drink milk or water. Call the local Poison Control Center or your physician immediately. The number for Iowa Poison Control Center is 800-222-1222. Avoid contact with skin or eyes. If contact occurs, flush the affected area with water. Contact a physician immediately if irritation develops.

1. Pass the stool into a clean, dry, plastic disposable container (e.g., margarine, cottage cheese, etc.) or place a large plastic bag or kitchen wrap over the toilet seat to catch the specimen.
2. Do not mix urine or water with the stool specimen.
3. Formed or semi-formed stool: Within 1 hour of collection, use the spork built into the lid of the Total-Fix Solution transport vial to fill vial to the red "fill line". Any blood or mucous should be included.
4. Liquid stool: Within 1 hour of collection, pour the stool into the Total-Fix Solution transport vial up to the red "fill line".
5. Tighten the cap completely. Store vial at room temperature.
6. If soiled, clean the outside of the vial with rubbing alcohol or soap and water. Verify that patient name and date of collection are still readable.
7. Wash hands thoroughly.

Within 1 hour of collection, transfer stool to Total Fix solution.

Travel history requested to assist diagnosis.

Rejection Criteria:
Stool not transferred to Total Fix solution within 1 hour of collection.
