Sputum and BAL Fluid

Identify specimen type. Refrigerate specimen if transport to laboratory is delayed over 1 hour.

Preferred sputum volume is 3-5 mL but smaller specimen volume is acceptable if the quality is satisfactory. Satisfactory quality implies the presence of mucoid or mucopurulent material.

Sputum Collection Notes:
1. An early morning specimen is preferred.
2. If possible, have the patient rinse mouth and gargle with water prior to sputum collection.
3. Instruct patient not to expectorate saliva or postnasal discharge into sterile container.

Room temperature or frozen specimen.

Deliver to laboratory immediately after collection.

1-3 days upon receipt at reference laboratory
