Product of Conception (POC)

For transport media, use Ham's F-10, RPMI or MEM. As a backup, Ringers lactate solution can be used in place of media. Do not put specimen in alcohol or formalin. Do not freeze or flame or refrigerate.

Specimen obtained aseptically according to your protocol. DO NOT SEND INTACT FETUS. Send only tissue specimen to the lab (chorionic villi - first choice; skin, diaphragm, chorion). Multiple tissue sources are acceptable. DO NOT PUT SPECIMEN IN ALCOHOL OR FORMALIN OR FREEZE. Label tube with patient name and medical record number.

Submit specimen to laboratory as soon as possible after collection. After hours specimens should be taken to Specimen Control. For questions after hours, call (319) 356-1616 and ask the operator to page the cytogenetics on-call staff at pager #5525.

Specimens accepted in the lab Monday-Friday, 0800-1700.

Allow 3-6 weeks for final results.
