Specimen Instructions:
Do not allow plasma to remain on cells. Centrifuge and pour off plasma into reference laboratory Trace Element-Free Transport Tube as soon as possible.

Minimum:
Preferred Minimum: 2.0 mL plasma from royal blue K2 EDTA tube
Absolute Minimum: 0.5 mL plasma from royal blue K2 EDTA tube
Rejection Criteria:
Separator tubes and specimens that are not separated from the red cells or clot. Hemolyzed specimens.
Turn Around Time:
1-2 days upon receipt at reference laboratory
Reference Range:
60-120 μg/dL
Interpretive Data:
Circulating zinc concentrations are dependent on albumin status and are depressed with malnutrition. Zinc may also be lowered with infection, inflammation, stress, oral contraceptives, and pregnancy. Zinc may be elevated with zinc supplementation or fasting. Elevated zinc concentrations may interfere with copper absorption.
Comments:
Patient Preparation: Diet, medication, and nutritional supplements may introduce interfering substances. Upon the advice of their physician, patient should be encouraged to discontinue nutritional supplements, vitamins, minerals, and nonessential over-the- counter medications for one week prior to sample draw.

Elevated results from noncertified trace element-free tubes may be due to contamination. Elevated concentrations of trace elements in plasma/serum should be confirmed with a second specimen collected in a trace element-free tube, such as royal blue K2 EDTA tube (shown above)or royal blue tube (no additive).
