MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY BIOPSY
TESTING AND CLINICAL SUPPORT

The initial immunofluorescence testing at the University of Iowa is performed in the Department of Pathology and evaluated by neuropathologist, Steven A. Moore, M.D., Ph.D. A panel of antibodies designed to identify patients with recognized abnormalities associated with the expression of components of the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex, and some other dystrophy-related proteins, is being utilized for screening purposes.

In selected cases muscle biopsies may be further characterized in the research laboratories of Dr. Steven Moore or Dr. Kevin Campbell. For example, western blotting is available for alpha-dystroglycan, calpain-3, and dysferlin.

In addition, the Neurogenetics Clinic under the direction of Katherine Mathews, M.D. is available for clinical consultation and patient referral at 319-356-1851. Dr. Mathews is a pediatric neurologist with expertise in neurogenetic diseases, especially muscular dystrophies. Christina Trout, RN is available for genetic counseling questions at 319-356-1851.

Frozen muscle should be packed in a sealed container to prevent desiccation and surrounded by an ample amount of dry ice in a styrofoam shipping container (refer to Muscle Biopsy - General Instructions). Additional technical or shipping assistance may be obtained by calling Melissa Jans or Terese Nelson at 319-356-2140.

Immunofluorescence screening by the Department of Pathology is a billed service. Further characterization of abnormal biopsies performed in the Moore or Campbell laboratories does not carry a charge. As advances are made in our knowledge of muscular dystrophy pathobiology, these diagnostic services will be continually upgraded.
