A large number of different bacterial species may normally be isolated from the contents of the lower intestine including: alpha hemolytic streptococci, non-hemolytic streptococci, staphylococci, diphtheroids, lactobacilli, enterococci, Enterobacteriaceae, Eubacterium species, Clostridium species, Escherichia coli, Proteus species, Bacteroides species, and yeasts.
