Specimen Instructions:

Refrigerate viral transport media with buccal swab if transport to laboratory is delayed over 1 hour.

Minimum:

Collection Instructions:
1. The parotid duct drains into the buccal cavity (the space between
   the cheek and teeth) near the upper molars. Massage the parotid
   gland area just in front of the ear and near the angle of the jaw
   for 30 seconds prior to collecting secretions on the swab.
2. Swab the buccal cavity between the cheek and gum by sweeping the
   swab near the upper molar to the lower molar area.
3. Place the buccal swab in the viral transport medium and cap.  The
   swab remains in the transport medium.
4. IMMEDIATELY deliver to Specimen Control.  

Universal Transport Media (UTM)/Viral Transport Kit, Product #33625 
with a rigid straight flocked swab is preferred but Product #33595 
with a flexible nasopharyngeal swab is acceptable.

Rejection Criteria:

Room temperature or frozen specimen. Calcium alginate or cotton- tipped wooden-shafted swab.

Delivery Instructions:

Deliver to laboratory immediately after collection.

Turn Around Time:

1-5 days upon receipt at reference laboratory
