Interpretive Data:
Centromere B antibodies occur primarily in patients with the CREST
(calcinosis, Raynaud's phenomenon, esophageal hypomotility,
sclerodactyly, telangiectasia) syndrome variant of scleroderma.
Centromere B antibodies are seen in up 50% or more of patients with
CREST syndrome. A negative result for centromere B antibodies does
not rule out CREST syndrome. Centromere B antibodies have been
described in some patients with primary biliary cirrhosis, rheumatoid
arthritis, or lupus erythematosus.
The centromere B antibodies assay does not detect all centromere antibodies that may be seen on the ANA using immunofluorescence.
