Trauma and Surgical Critical Care
The Trauma and Critical Care service consists of faculty members with a special interest in the care of the severely injured. UI Hospitals and Clinics is an American College of Surgeons verified Level I Trauma Center. As a Level I Trauma Center with pediatric commitment, UI Hospitals and Clinics serves as a major referral center for critically injured adult and pediatric patients, admitting more than 1,400 patients for traumatic injuries each year. Resources include a trauma registry, multidisciplinary trauma teaching conferences, and collaborative research with the UI Injury Prevention Center. In the 36-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit, surgeons and anesthesiologists cooperate to provide optimum care for severely injured or sick surgical patients.
Emergency General Surgery
The Emergency General Surgery (EGS) service is a growing clinical
program within the Division that provides rapid surgical assessment
and operative management of patients experiencing an acute general
surgical problem.
At the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, the EGS service is
interdisciplinary and patient-centered. This allows for the
development of evidence-based medicine and care management
guidelines that yield optimal clinical outcomes as well as a
seamless patient care experience.
The Burn Treatment Center is an American Burn Association and American College of Surgeons verified burn center. The center is a component of the UI Hospitals and Clinics' comprehensive program for patients with trauma and injuries. The burn center averages about 260 burn (including frost bite) and 100 soft tissue admissions a year. Most of the extensive burns in Iowa are sent to the center for care. Outpatient burn/wound care is also available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Outpatient visits average 1,800 per year. The Burn Treatment Center features a positive pressure isolation room and hydrotherapy facility for state of the art wound care.
