The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Organ Transplantation Program is multi-organ and multidisciplinary and, in addition to the transplant surgeons, includes members of the Department of Internal Medicine who are specialists in nephrology, hepatology, immunology, infectious diseases, cardiology, pulmonology, and a variety of clinical subspecialties.
The team also includes transplant coordinators, transplant pathologists, psychiatrists, anesthesiologists, radiologists, social workers, nutritionists, clinical pharmacists, and inpatient unit nurses, all of whom meet in a conference setting twice a week to discuss transplant research, transplant candidates, and other topics related to transplantation.
The transplant faculty receives external funding grants to contribute to the basic science of this specialty. Nearly two dozen multi-center, federally funded clinical protocols are going on at the University of Iowa. In addition, the department has an active cardiac and lung transplantation program and faculty and nursing staff play an active role in the UI Heart Failure Clinic.
