Overview of Training for Individual Specialties
TRANSPLANTATION SURGERY
Transplant faculty members have a special interest in liver transplantation, treatment of the patients with liver tumors, portal hypertension, pancreatic transplantation, renal transplantation, post-transplant infections, and living donation for renal and liver transplant patients. They are involved in the treatment of patients with numerous end stage liver diseases, also including tumors, HCC, and early stage cholangiocarcinomas. There is an active hepatobiliary service, and they do pancreatic transplantation and living related kidney transplants. In addition, the department has an active cardiac and lung transplantation program and faculty and nursing staff play an active role in the Heart Failure Clinic.
UNOS approved fellowships are available. One fellow is taken each year. A second year in research is offered as part of the two-year fellowship.
The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Organ Transplantation Program is multi-organ and multidisciplinary and, in addition to the transplant surgeons, includes members of the Department of Internal Medicine who are specialists in nephrology, hepatology, immunology, infectious diseases, cardiology, pulmonology, and a variety of clinical subspecialties. The team also includes transplant coordinators, transplant pathologists, psychiatrists, anesthesiologists, radiologists, social workers, nutritionists, clinical pharmacists, and inpatient unit nurses, all of whom meet in a conference setting twice a week to discuss transplant research, transplant candidates, and other topics related to transplantation. Transplant faculty are the recipients of external funding grants to contribute to the basic science of this specialty. Nearly two dozen multi-center, federally funded clinical protocols are going on at the University of Iowa. In addition, the department has an active cardiac and lung transplantation program and faculty and nursing staff play an active role in the Heart Failure Clinic.
