Overview of Training for Individual Specialties
PLASTIC AND RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY
Surgical residents participate actively in the care of all patients and are exposed to a rich operative experience in this field. The patient population, seen on this service, ranges from complex microsurgical free-flap reconstructions to aesthetic procedures such as face lift and blepharoplasty. Much of the inpatient population on this service will consist of difficult wound management problems including those due to diabetes or due to tumor ablation. Teaching priorities on the Plastic Surgery Service include management of difficult wounds and the development of technical skills in suturing. Basic reviews of anatomy and exposure to the full spectrum of plastic surgical practice is an emphasis in the weekly Monday morning conference. In addition to normal surgical techniques, the residents have exposure to both microsurgical and laser surgery technology along with more recent endoscopic approaches to plastic surgical problems.
In addition to their primary appointments in General Surgery, all Plastic Surgery members have appointments in the Department of Orthopaedics and the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. The specialty of Plastic Surgery covers the whole spectrum of anatomy from the scalp to the soles of the feet and ranges from congenital deformities in newborns to reconstructive procedures in the very elderly. Further, cosmetic procedures make up a large part of the activities of the Plastic Surgery Division. Ranging from Botox injections, liposuction, facelifts, tummy tucks, laser for wrinkles, to hair transplantation, and breast augmentation, the staff surgeons in the Division have expertise in all aspects of the cosmetic surgery field.
