Office of Scientific Affairs

The research enterprise of the UI Carver College of Medicine (CCOM) garnered $188 million in external funding in 2007 and the UI ranks 12th among public institutions in NIH funding. The enterprise is overseen by two senior associate deans for research: Michael Apicella, MD., Interim Associate Dean for Scientific Affairs and Gary Hunninghake, MD, Senior Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Sciences. S. Ramaswamy, PhD, is Interim Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs.

Researchers in the CCOM's 240 laboratories are served by state-of-the-art core research facilities and research support facilities. Much of the research conducted at the CCOM is interdisciplinary and collaborations are fostered and coordinated through major research centers, institutes and programs.

Many CCOM faculty members are internationally renowned for their research. Four faculty members are Howard Hughes Institute Investigators, 16 are members of the Institute of Medicine and three are members of the National Academy of Sciences.
