Radiologic Technology is the technical science that deals with the use of x-radiation for the purpose of making diagnosis in medicine.
The Radiologic Technologist is a professional, qualified by education and clinical experience to provide radiological services using a variety of radiological procedures. The technologist operates and adjusts radiological equipment and determines proper exposure factors so that optimum radiographic quality is achieved with a minimum of radiation exposure to the patient. Radiographers are employed primarily in hospitals, clinics, and doctors' offices, where they work closely with the other members of the health care team. Visit the U.S. Department of Labor's O*NET (29-2034 - Radiologic Technologists) for additional career information.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational outlook reports good news for those interested in a career in Radiologic Technology through 2018. From 2008 through 2018 employment of Radiologic Technologist is expected to increase by 17%, faster than the average for all occupations and those interested in securing a second modality, such as CT and MRI will have the best employment opportunities.
For statistics on salary expectations and additional information on a career in Radiologic Technology visit the Bureau of Labor and Statistics website (www.bls.gov/oco/ocos105.htm).
An article in U.S. News and World Report lists Radiologic Technology as one of the top 50 careers for 2011 (http://money.usnews.com/money/careers/articles/2010/12/06/best-careers-2011-healthcare-jobs)
The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) and the University of Iowa (UI) are separate facilities that provide different services for the RT student and require separate tuition-related and miscellaneous fee payments. The UIHC tuition and fees will be paid directly to the Program and the UI tuition and fees are paid through a U-bill sent to your residence during the first weeks of the fall and spring semester.
UIHC RT Program's Tuition and Fees: $6,500 (1st year's tuition) and $6,500 (2nd year's tuition) and $250 Program Activity Fee (1st year only).
UI's Tuition and Mandatory Fees: During the first weeks of the fall (August) and spring (January) semesters The University of Iowa will bill you for the UI portion of the tuition and the mandatory fees. The UI tuition will be $536/semester ($1,072 annually) and the mandatory fees will be $482/semester ($964 annually). All are your responsibility.
All Radiologic Technology students are required to complete a medical history and a health screening form, complete a TB skin and mask-fitting test annually and show proof of immunizations. The TB tests and any needed immunizations may be obtained at UI Student Health Services or from your personal physician. Cost varies.
*These figures are developed and provided by the UI Office of Student Financial Aid annually.
Charges incurred for food, University computer, activity, and services fees, student health insurance, car registration, parking, library and parking fines are billed on a monthly statement and mailed to your residence address. Fees are billed three times each semester and once during the summer session. Accounts unpaid 15 days after the billing date are reported to the Registrar for cancellation of registration. If your registration is canceled and you wish to reinstate, a reinstatement fee and all existing indebtedness must be paid within ten calendar days after the cancellation becomes effective or the privilege of reinstatement may be denied. If you do not reinstate after a canceled registration, any tuition and fees remaining for the canceled session are still due. If you cancel your registration, any refund due will be, upon request, mailed to you approximately 45 days following the date of cancellation.
Radiologic Technology Education takes great care in its pursuit to select and educate top quality technologists. The items below provide verification of our commitment to this pursuit.
Radiologic Technology Education has been educating technologists since 1925. During this time, the RT graduates have enjoyed outstanding achievement on The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists' (ARRT) Certification exam, consistently performing above the national and Iowa mean. In addition, since 1995, the graduates of the Radiologic Technology Education have achieved a 100% pass rate, with 99% passing on the first attempt.
