Admission Requirements

Interviews and consideration for acceptance are first granted to those individuals meeting or exceeding the following criteria. Select "Application Forms" from side menu to print the needed Radiologic Technology Education's application materials.

• Complete and submit and Radiologic Technology Education's Application of Admission form.
• Read, sign, date and submit the Radiologic Technology Education's Technical Standards Form.
• Complete, sign, date, and submit the Radiologic Technology Education's Job Shadowing and Health Care Experience Form.
  • Job-shadowing in diagnostic radiology (area where general exams are completed; i.e., chest, extremities, fluoroscopy, portables) is strongly recommended. Having a clear understanding of the tasks of a diagnostic technologist's job is very important for appreciating the career path.
  • Health care experience is strongly recommended. Previous health care experience is regarded as one measure of the applicant’s interest in health care. In addition, such experiences offer a means by which the applicant can better understand the patient care role of the Radiologic Technologist and appreciate the relationship between health providers. Health care experience can be gained through part-time and full-time employment or voluntary service. Hospitals, nursing homes, disability camps, and assisted living homes are just a few of the service areas that may offer such health care related opportunities. • Complete, sign, date, and submit the Radiologic Technology Education's Self-Disclosure form. (Include explanation sheets if applicable.)
• Submit Essay Requirement.
• Submit high school and any post-secondary official grade transcripts. A 2.5 or better cumulative grade point average in post-secondary education is required.
• Foreign Transcripts: Course work taken at foreign institutions must be evaluated for US equivalence by one of the following evaluation services and an official copy must be sent from the service directly to the program. Request a course-by-course evaluation to include course, subject codes, semester hours, and grades.

Services to contact:

• Prerequisite College Coursework: Proof of completion of the following coursework must be demonstrated prior to the start date of the RT Program class you are accepted into. Failure to demonstrate this course completion requirement will result in acceptance being withdrawn. This coursework is also required to complete the Radiation Sciences BS degree.   • 10:003 Accelerated Rhetoric (4 sh).
  • Natural Sciences: two courses (6-7 sh)
    • One from: 027:053 Human Anatomy (3 sh), 60:113 Human Anatomy Online (4 sh), or 60:110 Princ of Human Anatomy (3 sh)
    • One from: 027:050 Fundamentals of Human Physiology (3 sh), 027:130 Human Physiology (3 sh), 004:007 Gen Chem I (3 sh), 004:011 Princ of Chem I (4 sh), 002:021 Human Biology (4 sh), 029:008 Basic Physics (304 sh), or 029:011 College Physics I (4 sh)
  • 031:001 Elementary Psychology (3 sh)
  • 20E:103 Medical & Technical Terminology (2 sh)
  • Quantitative/Formal Reasoning (4 sh)
    • 22M:015 Math for Biological Sciences or 22M:009 Elementary Functions
  • Culture, Society, Arts: Choose two from 2 of the following areas (6 sh)
    • International & Global Studies; Historical Perspectives; Values, Society, and Diversity; and Literary, Visual, and Performing Arts
• Those applying must be 18 years of age by September 1 of the year applying.
• Citizenship: Under present College of Medicine regulations, applications will only be accepted from US citizens or permanent residents.

  International applicants whose first language is not English must submit results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for admission to the University's undergraduate colleges.  (The University of Iowa's institutional code is 6681.)

  Minimum TOEFL score requirements for admission

  Internet-based test (iBT): 80 with no subscore lower than 17 Paper-based test (PBT): 530

  Admitted students will also need to take an on-campus English Proficiency Evaluation unless they have a TOEFL score of 100 or higher on the iBT or 600 or higher on the PBT.

  Alternatives to the TOEFL—minimum score requirements

  • An ACT English subscore of 21
  • An SAT Critical Reading score of 540
  • An IELTS total score of 6.5, with no subscore lower than 6.0 (International English Language Testing System)

  English proficiency requirements, exceptions
  All ACT, SAT, and IELTS test takers also will be required to take the on-campus English Proficiency Evaluation.

  If your score is below our minimum requirement
  Students whose scores do not meet the minimum TOEFL (or alternatives) are not considered for admission to the University. These students may apply for admission to the Iowa Intensive English Program (IIEP).
