The Carver College of Medicine PSTP is designed primarily for physicians about to enter residency programs at the University of Iowa who have completed both the MD and PhD degrees. Applicants who have not completed the PhD degree but have a record of outstanding basic or clinical research experience are also eligible. Departments currently participating in the PSTP are Internal Medicine, Neurology, Pathology, and Pediatrics.
An academic allowance is provided each year to PSTP trainees. Use of the allowance varies between departments but generally it covers academic expenses such as books, memberships to professional organizations, PDAs and travel. Supplemental salary and benefits also may be provided during the research training years.
