The Iowa Department of Public Health recently observed 125 years of organized public health for the state of Iowa. "Advancing health through the generations" was the theme and it reflects public health efforts in the past, the present, and the future.

IDPH views health as a critical component of Iowa's future - healthy kids are ready to learn; healthy adults are ready to work; and healthy communities are ready to grow.

IDPH strives to improve the quality of the life for all Iowans by:

• Preventing epidemics and the spread of disease
• Protecting against environmental hazards
• Preventing injuries
• Promoting and encouraging healthy behaviors and mental health
• Preparing for and responding to public health emergencies and assisting communities in recovery
• Assuring the quality and accessibility of health services

By partnering with local public health, policymakers, health care providers, business and many others, IDPH fulfills its mission of protecting and promoting the health of all Iowans.
