Common Abbreviations Approved for Use by the Health
Information Management Subcommittee
The Health Information Management Subcommittee has approved and compiled a list
of acceptable abbreviations for use in the UIHC medical record. Abbreviations
of little general use and those that can easily be confused are not allowed. In
accordance with the Joint Commission standards, only approved abbreviations
(with the exception of the Standard International Chemical abbreviations) may
be used in the medical record and no abbreviations may be used in recording the
final diagnosis.
