The open laboratory design of the Pappajohn Biomedical Discovery Building will facilitate interaction between investigators who share a common goal but have disparate research strengths. This proximity will fuel creativity and invention.

In addition to integration within thematic areas, the Institute will strive to eliminate the artificial boundaries to interdisciplinary science that can be created by walls and floors. The Institute will use several strategies to integrate discovery and translation across thematic areas.

Genomics and Computational Biology

Many Institute investigators will use these tools. Close interactions betweeen the Pappajohn Biomedical Institute and the Iowa Institute of Human Genetics will serve as an integrating force.

Workshops and Seminars

Workshops and seminars will bring Institute investigators together to share world-class science and discussion.

Meetings of Trainees

Meetings of trainees with Institute leadership on a regular basis will bring students and postdocs together to discuss their work and will let them share in the excitement of the Institute and aid integration.

Iowa Institute for Biomedical Imaging

The Iowa Institute for Biomedical Imaging will collaborate with multiple Institute research themes.

A coffee house in a research Institute may seem like an extravagance. But, scientists talk science. So, when they get together over coffee or food, they talk about their work and their dreams for the future. These informal interactions forge collaborations, and what might seem to be "crazy ideas" become discoveries.
