- Clinical Laboratory Scientists perform chemistry tests on blood, serum, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, and other body fluids.
- Most analyses are performed using automated and computer-interfaced instrumentation.
- These labs provide service to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics 24 hours per day, seven days per week on a routine or rapid turn-around basis.
- More than 3.5 million patient tests were analyzed in the last year.
- Rapid turn-around tests include: electrolytes, creatinine, blood glucose, lipids, troponin, D-dimer, drugs of abuse, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and viral hepatitis testing.
- Endocrine (hormone) tests include estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), and free thyroxine (T4)
- Drug analysis is offered on approximately 20 different therapeutic drugs. These include:
- Acetaminophen, aspirin (salicylates)
- Cyclosporine. sirolimus, and tacrolimus (anti-rejection drugs for transplant patients)
- Lithium
- Theophylline (bronchodilator)
- Phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital, valproic acid (anti-seizure medications)
- Digoxin, lidocaine (anti-arrhythmics)
- Gentamicin, amikacin, tobramycin, vancomycin (antibiotics)
- Methotrexate
- Toxicology analyses performed in this section include:
- Drugs of abuse screening in urine
- Lead testing in blood
- Ethanol screening in serum or urine.
- Ethylene glycol determination by immunoassay in serum
- "Toxic alcohols" (methanol, isopropanol, ethylene glycol, and propylene glycol) by gas chromatography (following approval by pathology resident or Chemistry director)
