The Histopathology laboratory has a comprehensive program of services designed to support University of Iowa house staff, faculty, residents, and outside clinics and institutions. The services are available Monday-Friday from 0600 to 2100. All weekend hours are on-call by pager 887-8778. Histopathology provides routine surgical tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and slide staining preparatory to pathologist review; cytochemical special stains requested for differential diagnosis, complete post-mortem histological support, and research project histological support. Neurohistologistic support for muscle, nerve, and brain specimens including a variety of enzyme histochemical studies for the evaluation of myopathic and neurogenic disorders is also available.
Histopathology prepares approximately 86,000 blocks from 27,000 surgical and 348 Autopsy cases per year performed at University of Iowa Heath Care. Histopathology also provides histologic support services for the University of Iowa Heath Care Bone Marrow, Cytology, and Immunology Laboratories.
