Research

"laboratory medicine", from the application of light microscopy to immunohistochemistry, from serology to flow cytometry, and molecular genetics. In order for a pathology department to lead, and not just follow, it must create and maintain "germinal centers" of those sciences related to human biology and pathobiology. This difficult and fragile process is called "research". It is the strength of our Pathology Department that this process has happened in the past. We are fully committed to its continuation.

In support of this research effort, the Department has a Grants/Contracts Administrator, Nicole Louvar, and has established a research resource office for investigators and research staff.

Pathology Core Facilities: The Department of Pathology houses a number of core facilities to assist research investigators with their research projects. These core facilities include the Comparative Pathology Laboratory, the Clinical Trials Support Core, the Histology Research Laboratory, the Materials Development Area (MDA) and the Pathology Research Flow Cytometry Facility.

Comparative Pathology Laboratory: The Comparative Pathology Laboratory (CPL) is the animal research support core for the Department of Pathology in the Carver College of Medicine. The mission of the CPL is to provide veterinary pathology services and support to scientists investigating animal models of disease. The CPL primarily serves research faculty within the University of Iowa and UI Carver College of Medicine. Services are available for use to investigators outside of The University of Iowa.

Department of Pathology Clinical Trials Support Core: You may request use of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Pathology Laboratories to perform services and testing specified by a sponsor's research protocol. This Clinical Trial Support Core can assist you with this service.

Histology Research Laboratory: The Histology Research Laboratory provides services for the processing, embedding, sectioning, and tinctorial and immunohistochemical staining of tissues. Expertise in the handling of fresh, frozen, and fixed cells and tissues is the building block of the laboratory.

Materials Development Area (MDA): The Materials Development Area provides basic photographic and graphic services strictly to University of Iowa Department of Pathology personnel.

The Pathology Research Flow Cytometry Facility: The mission of the Flow Cytometry Facility is to support and promote scientific research by providing flow instrumentation and expertise to Pathology faculty, staff and students.
