Research conducted in the DeGowin Blood Center is closely related to services and patient-care activities provided by the Center. One major effort is funded by an NIH Program Project Grant and is entitled "Neonatal Anemia: Pathogenesis and Treatment." Investigators in the group are studying neonatal erythropoiesis, the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of erythropoietin, the application of a biotin nonradioactive red blood cell (RBC) tag for performing RBC volume measurements and kinetic studies, the development of biotinylated erythropoietin as a means to study the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of recombinant erythropoietin, the clinical and physiological basis for RBC transfusions, the influence of iron and protein dietary supplements on erythropoiesis and RBC transfusions, and, finally, delayed cord clamping at delivery as a means to diminish need for transfusion support for high-risk neonates.

A second major effort is funded by an NIH grant entitled "Transfusion Medicine & Hemostasis Clinical Trials Network" that supports involvement in the design of and participation in clinical trials addressing key issues in transfusion medicine/blood banking and hemostasis.

Other projects include: (1) Investigation of optimal techniques for collecting platelet and leukocyte concentrates by automated cytapheresis; (2) Collection and transfusion (transplantation) of hematopoietic progenitor cells obtained from the peripheral blood of pediatric and adult patients; and (3) Application of quality programs (process validation and control) to blood center activities.
