Hemoglobin A1c values of 5.7-6.4% indicate an increased risk for developing diabetes mellitus and are considered prediabetes. The healthcare team should counsel patients accordingly. In patients with diabetes, HbA1c goals should be discussed with the healthcare team.

Hemoglobin A1c values of 6.5% or greater are diagnostic of diabetes mellitus. In patients with diabetes, HbA1c goals should be discussed with the healthcare team.

Test Limitations:
Rheumatoid factor less than 750 IU/mL and ascorbic acid less than 
50 mg/dL do not interfere.

In hemolytic anemia and iron deficiency anemia, the average age of 
erythrocytes is altered. Caution should be used when interpreting the 
HbA1c results from patients with these conditions (2).

Lavender tube is sent as whole blood, no processing necessary.
Each sample must be labeled with at least TWO full patient identifiers (First/Last Name & DOB are sufficient for non-UIHC affiliated clients) to avoid sample rejection/delays.
Sample Storage:
Refrigerate.
Transport Instructions:
Place labeled specimen into zip-lock type biohazard bag; seal bag.
Place completed requisition into outside pocket of bag.
Transport in cooler with refrigerated coolant packs.
