Minimum:

Rectal, eye swab or peritoneal fluid.
Also acceptable for newborns: nasopharyngeal aspirate/washing/swab

Rejection Criteria:

Samples not collected in Chlamydia culture transport media. Dry swabs, wood swabs, and calcium alginate swabs.

Turn Around Time:

2-3 days upon receipt at reference laboratory.

Reference Range:

Culture negative for Chlamydia trachomatis.

Comments:

Endocervical or urethral specimens are recommended to be collected in viral transport media.

Methodology:

Cell Culture/Immunofluorescence

Instructions:

Source of specimen is preferred.
Collect nasopharyngeal swab in viral transport medium.

Sample Processing:

Immediately place specimen into vial of transport media and seal tightly.
Indicate specimen/fluid type on requisition.
Label transport tube with two patient identifiers, date and time of collection.
Maintain sterility and forward promptly to lab.
Do not collect on Fridays, on weekends, or before any holidays.
Keep refrigerated and submit to laboratory.

Sample Storage:

Refrigerate.
Specimen cannot be frozen.

Transport Instructions:

Place requisition into outside pocket of bag.
Transport in cooler with refrigerated coolant packs.
