Specimen:
Rectal, Eye Swab, Peritoneal Fluid, Endocervical or Urethral Nasopharyngeal Aspirate/Washing/Swab for Newborns
Minimum:
Rectal, eye swab or peritoneal fluid.
Also acceptable for newborns: nasopharyngeal aspirate/washing/swab

Rejection Criteria:
Samples not collected in Chlamydia culture transport media. Dry swabs,
wood swabs, and calcium alginate swabs.
Turn Around
Time:
2-3 days upon receipt at reference laboratory.
Reference Range:
Culture negative for Chlamydia trachomatis.
Comments:
Endocervical or urethral specimens are recommended to be collected in
viral transport media.

Processing:
Immediately place specimen into vial of transport media and seal tightly.
Indicate specimen/fluid type on requisition.
Label transport tube with two patient identifiers, date and time of collection.
Maintain sterility and forward promptly to lab.
Do not collect on Fridays, on weekends, or before any holidays.
Keep refrigerated and submit to laboratory.
