Amniotic Fluid

Collection Medium:

Minimum:

Preferred minimum:  5 ml amniotic fluid
Absolute minimum:  1 mlanmiotic fluid

Testing Schedule:

24 hrs/day, 7 days a week, including holidays.

Analytic Time:

3 hours (upon receipt in laboratory)

Reference Range:

Negative:  PG absent or <0.5 mcg/ml.  Significant risk of RDS
Low Positive:  Pg > or = to 0.5 mcg/ml.  Low risk of RDS
High Positive:  PG > 2 mcg/ml.  Mature

Comments:

Test performed only if amniotic fluid contains bilirubin, or if an 
immature or indeterminant fetal lung maturity result is obtained from a 
sample contaminated with meconium or blood.
